I created recollectiions in 2019 to reimagine memories. The feeling of a song lyric playing over my favorite photo of me and my friends, because I wanted to remember what I was listening to on repeat when I wore that outfit that made me feel like myself.
Recollectiions by definition means memories. Art is a powerful medium because
- the process of creating art creates memories (I remember the day we were in my uni flat in London, chopping up the vocal track on that song — my first time audio engineering on Ableton)
- the art itself holds the memories that the artist puts into the art
- revisiting a piece of art allows us to relive memories
To spread a piece of art to an audience means each individual in the audience creates their own memory of that piece of art
- the first time I heard that song
- the week I played it on repeat to feel nostalgic and relive that first time
- the taste of the cookies I was eating in the back of the car when it played on the radio
- the feeling of my bleeding fingers on the guitar strings after my 100th time practicing a cover to Ten Tonne Skeleton by Royal Blood
I was listening to a song I used to love when I was in middle school. It’s a heartbreak song. I never understood the lyrics. Maybe I thought I did back then, but I really didn’t understand the feeling of heartbreak until this summer.
I’m bad with my words, and I’m bad at processing emotion — I found myself putting my emotions into a remix I made on FL Studio instead. I remixed that heartbreak song I used to love in middle school, I made it my own.
I think art is the most beautiful way to reimagine memory.
